Following the Super Falcons’ 3-1 loss to Japan in the women’s football competition now underway at the 2024 Paris Olympics, some Nigerians have responded.
In the 22nd minute, Chelsea’s Maika Hamano gave the Asian champions the lead.
Ten minutes later, Mina Tanaka increased the lead. Three minutes before halftime, Jennifer Echegini, a recent PSG acquisition, pulled one back.
But Hana Kitagawa added to Japan’s advantage with an incredible free kick.
Nigeria has been eliminated from the women’s football competition as a result of their match against Japan.
All three of the Super Falcons’ group stage games had ended in losses.
Prior to losing their last group match against Japan, Randy Waldrum’s team had suffered 1-0 losses to Brazil and Spain.
Reacting to the Falcons’ performances, some Nigerians have expressed regret and urged the team to “go and marry and forget about playing football.”
Others pushed the players to exploit the upcoming demonstration in Nigeria, which is scheduled to happen between August 1 and August 10, as a justification for their defeat to Japan.
